For about two years I had an index card taped to my cabinet that said “If it does not carry the ball down the field, then don’t do it”. When I read it daily it reminded me to stay focused on the mission. During the Super Bowl two weeks ago, My husband would yell, “North & South Boys, North & South”. The next day it dawned on me that we can’t get detracted and go east & west but stay the course…running the ball down the field which is north & south to the end zone (the mission)!
“Brothers I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do; Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead. I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Phil. 3:13-14
We have to press on, no matter the circumstances…rain, sleet, snow, freezing temps, injury, underdog, underprivileged, or misunderstood. Press on toward the goal, looking and running ahead not side to side.
I enjoyed hearing Nick Foles’ story of two years prior, he was contemplating giving up football. I am sure he was walking in the valley during that time of confusion. They say he went camping with a brother-in-law and apparently had some clarity after the trip. I imagined they walked up out of that valley together. We all need a partner to walk with and encourage each another, ans I am glad he had him. Nick came back and said he would play but wanted to play for Andy Reid, coach of Kansas City Chiefs. He played as backup quarterback to Alex Smith. He probably didn’t get much game time and he wasn’t in the lime light but he as pressing toward the goal…watching, waiting, training, conditioning, and learning. As you may know the rest of the story, he went on to be traded to the Philadelphia Eagles! And again was the backup quarterback to Carson Wentz. He still was pressing toward the goal, watching, waiting, training, conditioning, and learning. When they needed him, he was ready for the task of getting the ball down the field, to the end zone, and boy what a celebration that was! He clearly has demonstrated the keys to success!
- Press on toward the goal. Never stop dreaming.
- Watch and wait. Be patient and consistent.
- Train and condition. Enjoy the journey.
- Learn and be ready. Envision it.
- Run the ball and celebrate.
“Trust God to bear fruit in your life however He chooses to. Don’t sell yourself or your dreams, short. Be persistent in accomplishing whatever He has placed in your heart. Your diligence, persistence, and commitment to His purpose are the keys that define success.” Tony Dungy
